What is the maximum number of Neon Tetra fish that you can have in a 1 gallon fish tank?
My nephew’s tank has only 3 neon fish. I’ve read that they should come in a school of 6, but I don’t know if adding three more to a 1 gallon tank is too little or just the right amount of space.
Sadly, none, for several reasons:
- a one gallon tank is too small to heat reliably. Neons are tropicals. They need a heater. Heating a one gallon is not safe.
- they are too small to filter and need daily cleaning, or the build up of waste will make the fish sick. Neons aren’t hardy and won’t do well like that.
- neons are extremely active and need the space of a 15-20 gallon to zoom around. The tiny space of a one gallon will make them very stressed and even more susceptible to disease.
Yes, neons should be in schools of six, but that tank is already overstocked and it’s not fair to put another three fish in it. It’s a terrible environment for them. Remember that stocking is not about size, but also about activity levels, sensitivity etc. Why not buy him a ten gallon for his birthday? It’s still not ideal, but so very much better, and could be safely heated, filtered and hold 6 neons.
